Sickness

Sickness benefits

If you live in one of the Nordic countires and become ill or injured while you are living or working in Denmark, you are entitled to medical visits to a doctor and hospital treatment which are basically free of charge.

This is because the health service in Denmark is primarily public and financed through tax revenue. You will have been issued with a health card in the municipality where you are listed at the Registry office. If you do not have a fixed abode in Denmark you should contact the municipality where you work, in other words where your employer is located for the purpose of being issued with a special health card which documents your entitlement to public health benefits.

If you become sick while you are resident and/or working in Denmark

Treatment by a doctor

At your municipality choose insurance group 1 or 2 and a GP (general practitioner) who will act as your day-to-day doctor if you choose group 1. Treatment by your GP is free of charge to you and this doctor can refer you to consultants, for physiotherapy, hospital treatment etc. If you become acutely ill outside the doctor’s practice hours you can contact the emergency services or your local accident and emergency department that are linked to a hospital. Call 112 if you need an ambulance in the event of a serious accident. You can also choose to be insured in group 2.

Dentist

You can choose your own dentist. Your dentist’s bill will be deducted from the public subsidy that is paid for certain preventive examinations.
